The 2019 SCLC-GKC Artist Tribute will feature artists local to Kansas City who will pay tribute to music and spoken word of the Civil Rights Movement (1955-1970); the period in which African Americans strove to outlaw the discrimination of their people and gain voting rights in the United States. Music played a paramount role in the Civil Rights Movement and carries on today as Black Americans express their feeling to each other and the world. Music and spoken word provide spiritual support and is used as a tool for peace. But most of all music and spoken word unifiy the Black Americans under a common goal, to defend democracy, advance peace, and make justice!
